Getting lost in this book broke my heart all over again. Robert Kennedy was an extraordinary man for extraordinary times, and I count myself lucky to have witnessed his campaign for President. I didn’t read this much-reviewed novel until it came out in paperback, but I was hooked from the fabulous first paragraph. Part mystery, part exploration of the nature of friendship, the book haunted me for days after I finished it (and then I started on her second novel).
Not only is Sloane Crosley’s detail-driven debut a comical masterpiece, it’s also freakishly smart with only a hint of neuroses. Cake takes you through summer camp, weddings, volunteer gigs, attempted one night stands and “The Beauty of Strangers” with a wit we mortals can only dream of.
