Green goddess: Ann Bell Stone | Farmer

Ann is down to earth literally and figuratively. Well-known to the Lexington Farmers’ Market crowd, she handles marketing and the Community-Supported Agriculture (CSA) program for Elmwood Stock Farm in Georgetown. Through the CSA, customers prepay in spring, and Ann and her family provide them a weekly share of freshly harvested produce all season. “It’s food with a face,” she says, calling it an opportunity for customers to “engage in learning more about where their food comes from. That’s why they’re interested in being a partner with the farm.” The sixth generation to farm, Ann returned to the family business – owned by her folks – about 17 years ago, bringing an interest in organic and sustainable practices. Today, through hard work, most of the farm is certified organic. “There’s not a lot of local, organic wholesalers in Kentucky. We’re one of the largest farms that’s certified in the state. I wish there was more.” elmwoodstockfarm.com
