“There are more than two genders, and they all are a part of the beautiful web that is Lexington. Education is key. I love talking with people about gender in the Bluegrass—it can surprise you.”

Mel, an aspiring educator who recently scored a second master’s degree, counts co-founding UK OUTSource, a campus resource center, among her proudest achievements. The center, which opened in 2007, provides an affirming environment for students exploring sexuality and gender identity issues. Mel credits older brother Paul, who has Down syndrome, with teaching her about life, gender and acceptance.
